Dear Colleagues and Friends

The picturesque university city of Muenster was the official host of the fourth Annual General Meeting of Eurobonet, held from 18th to 20th January, 2010 at the newly opened Treff Hotel. The organizing committee, headed by Horst Burger, did an excellent job in running the event, which all went very smoothly.

Talks were given by the research line, workpackage and technology platform leaders and over thirty posters were on exhibition throughout the three-day meeting. It was most interesting to see the assorted coauthorship of the posters, bearing witness to the trend in integration among the network partners.

The onus of the first day was on drug development and translation research, with the afternoon session of the first day chaired by Bass Hassan of Oxford University. The focus of the topics was early clinical trial development in bone sarcomas and disease specific target validation. The afternoon session ended with a meeting with the medical director of MSD Norway, Dr. Gunnar Saeter. The highlight of the second day was the keynote lecture, "An overview of Ewing sarcoma trials," by Prof. Heribert Juergens of Muenster.

The EuroBoNeT network is now entering its fifth and final contractual year. The Scientific Officer in Brussels, Jan Van De Loo has strongly encouraged cooperation with the Conticanet network and work on the sustainability of the two networks after the contract expires. Discussions were held during the meeting on the possibility of merging the two tissue banks and the two websites. There are also plans to hold a joint final meeting of the two networks in January 2011. One joint project that is now underway is the establishment of a joint open access journal, with the projected title of "Clinical Sarcoma Research".

It was also proposed by the Steering Committee and agreed by the General Assembly to apply for a six-month extension of the contract with the European Commission, in order to complete all the deliverables and work on cooperation with Conticanet and on the sustainability of the two networks.

European Congress of Pathology
Florence, 4- 9 September 2009

The European Congress of Pathology represents the main event for European pathology, attracting to Florence over 3,000 pathologists from all over the world. Bone and soft tissue pathology traditionally represents one of the hot topics and all the events related to this field proved remarkably successful. Dr. Angelo Paolo Dei Tos and Dr. Pancras Hogendoorn organized and chaired a Symposium as well as an Evening Conference dedicated to several aspects of diagnosis and research in Bone and Soft Tissue sarcomas. All events included top speakers, many of whom are key partners of EuroBoNet. Drs. Hogendoorn and Dei Tos also organized a Short Course entirely focused on translational research in mesenchymal tumours that certainly represented one of the highlights of the whole meeting. Each session gathered approximately 400 people, proving to be one of the most well-attended sessions of the meeting. Needless to say, the European Congress of Pathology represented a very good platform from which to propagate the aims and achievements of EuroBoNet. The next ECP event will be in Krakow in September and EuroBoNet will again be present as a major player at the event.

Second Consensus Meeting on Soft Tissue Sarcoma, GIST and Bone Sarcoma, Lugano 14-16 November, 2009

ESMO Guidelines on Soft Tissue Sarcoma, Bone Sarcomas
and GIST.

Lugano, November 2009

One of the many achievements of EuroBoNet in 2009 has been to become a key partner (along with the twin Network of Excellence, Conticanet) of the European Society of Medical Oncology in the process of developing the Clinical Recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of Bone and Soft Tissue Sarcomas, and GIST. Approximately 30 top experts from Europe, US and Japan met for three days in Lugano, Switzerland, to discuss and finalize the consensus documents that will soon appear in the Annals of Oncology. The Lugano meeting represented a multiprofessional effort at which medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical and orthopaedic oncologists, and pathologists contributed their specific expert knowledge. In the case of Soft Tissue Sarcomas and GIST, the ESMO clinical recommendations are now in their third edition, whereas Bone Sarcomas were at their debut. Joining ESMO and Conticanet in this effort represents a key step for the future of EuroBoNet, which will now be permanently involved in the development of all future guidelines. It has to be remembered that one of the aims of EuroBoNet is to integrate existing knowledge and spread excellence. The ESMO clinical recommendations will certainly greatly help in advancing the quality of diagnosis and treatment of sarcomas both within and outside Europe.
